Budhdhika lives in a village called Ipalogama in Anuradhapura district. She is an Electrician in a Community where it is considered unusual for women to engage in such professions. Buddika is mostly engaged in mobile phone selling and repairing.
Buddhika joined BMI in the year of 2011, and received a loan amount of Rs. 25,000 to buy phone accessories for her business. But, unfortunately she lacked a proper market to promote her business. She also took a few courses in mobile phone repairing and some related courses for electricians. This increased her skills and knowledge on the subject. This also enabled her to improve her services to her customers. With improved services, the need arose for procuring more equipment to expand her business. Therefore, she took out a second loan from BMI for Rs. 50,000.
Budhdhika’s husband is also an Electrician and also assists her with her work. She also has a son and a daughter, who are both are schooling. Currently, Buddhika earns around Rs. 50,000 a month. However, her expenses are high and she is unable to make a good profit from the business. In order to increase her profits and to purchase more equipment for her business she has applied for a new loan of Rs. 75,000. She hopes further expansion of her business will also create new employment opportunities in her village.
