Priyadharshani ( her husband shown in the picture) is from a village in Ippologama in the Anuradhapura District. She is new to BMI and has applied for her first loan amounting to LKR 30,000/-. Priyadharshani has been engaged for the past 2 years, in the manufacture of eekel brooms. These brooms, which are used for sweeping gardens are very much in demand in urban areas as well as the rural areas of the country. However, they do not fetch a large price and are sold with very small margins. Priyadharshani is fairly successful in this business and earns a sum of LKR 10,000/- on average per month. This is quite good considering that she works alone and everything is hand made.
With the aid of the loan from BMI, she intends to purchase the raw materials needed for the manufacture of the brooms. She hopes that she will be able to develop her business to a larger manufacturing scale so that more units are made and supplied to the town shops as well. She hopes that she will be able to increase production by employing young girls from the village in the future.
Priyadharshani is married and has two small children aged below 7 years. Her husband works as a driver. She is very determined to become a successful entrepreneur in the future and uplift her family’s living standards.
