Kumarihami (47), is an existing client of BMI. She lives in the Kotmale area in the NuwaraEliya District. She first joined BMI in 2012 and borrowed a loan amounting to LKR 30,000/-. At the time Kumarihami wanted to start a catering business for schools in the area. This was moderately a success but did not bring in enough income compared to the hard work put into it and also it did not sustain the family’s monetary needs. Kumarihami since has decided to stop the catering business to schools.
She has made progress with starting her own tea plantation and at present earns a monthly income of LKR 5,250/- from it. She has approximately 15 years experience in the tea planting industry. Kumarihami has now applied for a second loan amounting to LKR 50,000/- to be utilized in re-planting the existing property, with new plants.
Kumarihami is married to Dingiri Banda who is also working on a tea estate in the area. They have two adult children living with them and one of them is unemployed. They also have a schooling son. The family finds it very difficult to meet their day to day needs due to the high costs of living. Kumarihami is determined to start this new business and make it a success since, her income is a large contributor to the family’s needs. She is hardworking and will also get all the support from her husband and children.
