Nirmaladevi resides with her husband and two young children in the Galigamuwa area in the Kegalle district. Approximately 6 years ago she began a grocery business to supplement the income which her husband receives by working in the hotel industry. Their average monthly income is currently Rs 30,000.
In July 2010 Nirmaladevi took out a BMI loan of Rs 25,000 to purchase wholesale items for her grocery business. This enabled her to increase the quantity of goods which she sells retail and was successful in increasing her monthly profit. As a result, in November 2011 she took out a loan of Rs 50,000 to do similar activities and continue to expand her business. She has now applied for a further loan of Rs 75,000 in order to invest in her business at this time of success, increasing its profitability in a manner which will enable her to help meet the expenses of the family and two young children.
