53 year old Malkanthi is a resident of Ipalogama and an active BMI cluster member. Her husband Jayarathna is a teacher by profession. Since she has enough free time, she focused on starting a business activity from home to generate additional income other to supplement her husband’s salary.
With the motivation she got from BMI and her fellow cluster members, Malkanthi ventured into dress making and selling sarees from her home. Taking a business loan in October 2011 and invested the total amount of Rs. 25,000 in her trade, allowed her to further develop her business. Having regular customers and steady demand led her to receive an approximate monthly income of Rs. 8,000. Malkanthi applied for her second BMI loan of Rs. 50,000. She is confident this investment will bring more profit in future.
