Chandra is a small entrepreneur from Gonapathirawa village in Anuradhapura district. She owns a small coconut oil production business, with a one machine to extract oil from coconut kernels. She joined BMI in 2010 November and obtained LKR 25,000 which was used to purchase inputs and the machinery to start the business. She had around two years experience in this business and her approximate monthly income from it is LKR 35,000.
Her husband is a farmer and they live in a partially completed house with their two daughters and Chandra’s elderly mother. One daughter has just started schooling and the smallest is attending the kinder-garden.
Chandra is taking her second loan now and with the money she plans to increase the production capacity of the business. She wishes to buy more inputs in bulk so that it would reduce the production cost and increase the profit. Since farming does not generate enough income to cover all the family costs, Chandra wants to continue with the current business and make it a sustainable source of income for the future. She also has the hopes to complete their house and provide a good education for the two girls.
